I think of my three, my daughter was the toughest to potty train. She didn't have a problem with #1, but she had a huge phobia about going #2 on the potty. It got to the point where she would hold it for days and her stomach would hurt before she would finally go. By that time, she'd be so backed up that it would take a baby suppository to make her go. My husband and I called suppositories the "butt medicine".
When it would get to that point, my husband would look at me and start singing the Bon Jovi song "Bad Medicine" except we amended the lyrics...."Your love is like my butt medicine....".
Thankfully, she outgrew the butt medicine stage pretty quickly. Even though our daughter is 12 now, my husband and I still can't sing Bon Jovi's song without spoofing his lyrics.

I will be getting ready to do the potty training thing wiht DS. With DD 10 years ago she only go tmotivated when she was able to move to the 2 year old room at day care with her friends. But from then on every 2 minutes she had to go potty!
I am potty training my son right now. I should of started earlier. He is 2 1/2.
In the morning when Clifford is on he sits on his potty if he gets up i turn Clifford off.

My daughter is 1 1/2, and we just started trying to potty train her. She can take off her own diaper and throw it away, she holds her pee and poo until she's home, and she'll sit on her potty so I thought she was ready. But she will not go on the potty. We made up a chart with stars, tried bribing her with candy, and singing songs about peeing in the potty. But no luck! We'll keep trying. What else can you do?

My son was so tramatized by potty training he actually called 911. When I answered the phone the operator said: 911 what's your emergency? I said I'm just trying to potty train my son! I guess I should be lucky I didn't get a ticket. Charlotte

Good luck! I'm still trying to figure this out with my daughter but she loves it when I make up potty-themed lyrics to familiar songs.
To Bingo:
There was a girl named Brea ___, went potty in the toilet, P-O-T-T-Y, go potty in the toilet.
Have fun
My oldest daughter refused to poo in the potty well after she was 'potty trained'. She would bring a diaper and beg me to put it on her. It didn't take long to realize she didn't want to poo in the potty. But the why took a while.
Finally we tried putting a layer of toilet paper over the top of the water. I'm not sure how we came to this "Aha!" moment, but it worked! Hooray! She was afraid of getting splashed.
I'm following your blog.

Be patient and loving, and let her take her time when she has to go!

With my daughter, verbal praise worked best. When she went in the potty, I would act all amazed and tell her how proud I was of her. When she had an accident, I would be patient and tell her that it was okay, she would do better next time. You have to stick to your guns and not let them talk you into putting the diaper back on. Good luck!
It's been hit and miss with my grandson, So far pure bribery and consistence seems to be "sorta" working". lol I put a giant crayon bank next to the potty and when he goes, i reward him. Whatever works at this point. he is stubborn !!! lol
My best tip is to wait until the child is ready. When they show understanding of the whole potty business, can pull their pants down, come to you when they need a diaper change, etc. So many parents are in such a rush to train, but it goes so much easier if you just wait until they're REALLY ready.

tip - remember that each kid is an individual & will be ready on their own schedule - don't get frustrated if others make judgemental comments.

I actually had an easy time with potty training my 3 children. I simply took the diaper off, showed them the potty, told them what to do, and placed a little potty in the bathroom and one in the room they were playing in. I left their diapers off most of the time and they had no problem running over to the potty and doing whatever they needed to do.

My youngest son was over 3 when he potty trained. he just didn't care and no matter what rewards we offered it was no big deal. Good thing he's not like that now at 14 LOL msboatgal at aol dot com
Be consistent, be encouraging and find what motivates her. My son loooooved candy so an m&m or something small ever time he went did wonders.
Also plan on staying home while in the critical stages. . . it's a huge pain being out! Good luck!

When it's cold, I would put a hot water bottle on the potty so that it wouldn't be cold to sit on.
pinkveganmiso(at)yahoo(dot)com
Definitely find some children's books on potty training so she understands what's happening. I like "A Potty for Me!" and "Once Upon a Potty." utgal2004[at]yahoo[dot]com
Take the potty to where your child is playing. Initial training is all about availibility. Put an old shower curtain or trash bag under it to protect from spills.

Hi! GOOD LUCK! We are in the process now. We allowed our daughter to pick out her own potty seat and chair. She goes back and forth to both. We offer her M&Ms and Oreo cookies...try running water too - this may help your little one pee! GOOD LUCK!! Be patient it takes time :) Oral Praise no matter what works GREAT! Just for trying..
i would put cheerios in toilet to get son to learn to aim
With both my kids, we just stopped allowing them to wear diapers and put them in big kid underwear. They stopped going in their pants within a week. It is messy, but it is worth it! They were both trained before they were 2!

I have two boys, so we did the whole "pee in the toilet and aim at some floating cheerios" game quite a bit..lol

My toddler just turned 2 and we've been trying to get him to sit on the potty and go. He sits on the potty, but has no interest in going. We;ve tried so many things, but nothing has worked so far. Everyone tells us to just be patient, which we are. It's just a waiting game now, sigh.
Thanks for this great giveaway!

I used to hate when people said this, but it's so true. Let them do it on their own. They'll do it when they're ready. My daughter and I butted heads for almost 9 months, and then I just gave up and she decided to do it! I think it's one of the few things that they can control in their lives, and they definitely will. Good luck!

For my son, we had "naked time" every morning for 2 hours. He was not allowed to sit on the couch or any chairs until he had used the toliet. After he used it, we put his diaper on and went about the day as normal. He actually NEVER had an accident. Then when we potty trained for real, we went cold turkey. No pull ups (waste of money and just fakes everyone out). Every 30 minutes he was dry, he got a sticker. 5 stickers = a treat. We slowly upped the amount of time until he was earning one sticker per day. He was about 30 months old when he trained, and it took under a week. My daughter was only 20 months old and she also took under a week! Good luck! My kids were really easy compared to some of my friends' kids...
No tips we are still training but my son who is two saw my husband peeing I guess so he put his step stool in front of the potty, stood on it and peed "big boy style"
it was so cute!
I have no tips, my son is only 13 months, but I love all the tips you have got so far.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Best potty training tips I have are:
-let her be naked as much as possible
-keep a potty in whatever room she is in
-offer praise for even trying
-don't shame her or make her feel bad for accidents -- you want her to be proud and confident
-let her help clean up accidents
-LOTS of things to drink!
Out of four children, three boys and one girl the girl was the easiest to train. I used a little chart and everytime one of used the restroom I gave them a sticker to put on the chart. When they got seven stickers in a row I let them pick out something from the prize box. Which it was little do dad from the Dollar Tree.

I found a potty training book at a garage sale.
My daughter used it with her girl & she just loved it.
It was a big help in training her.
make sure your child shows signs of readiness before actively potty training.
We were doing pretty well with the potty training...my son was going to the potty during the day but still having accidents during the night. I put pull ups on him at night and every morning it was wet. So one morning, I let out a big ole sigh and said, "Son, don't you wake up during the night when you have to pee pee?" He said, "Yes, but I gots a diaper on." He thought if he had it, use it. I guess. Lol. When they're ready, they'll let you know. Potty training is one thing that can not be forced. Good luck.
My oldest was easier to train than my youngest, because she wanted to be a big sister and not a baby in diapers. For my youngest, we actually had to put the potty chair in the playroom with her and let her go bare bottom. She wouldn't take the time to stop playing and go in the potty but she would use the potty seat in the playroom. After about 3 days of success, we moved the potty into the bathroom and then she did fine.
I used the video Once Upon a Potty it comes in boy or girl version. It is a cute story that little ones can identify with. My best advice though is to remain patient and do not stress the child if she is not ready, she will not be receptive. Godd Luck!

Son #1, got to run around in our yard and "water trees" till he had the hang of it ---then he taught Son #2 -- it was really pretty easy for me....and I was so happy it worked out.
I know that good tip for potty training is a chart. Kids love stickers. They love rewards period. My daughter had a Dora chart and we read a potty training book for girls. My little girl enjoyed the reward of stickers and a book. Potty training is not easy but keep reminding yourself they can't live in diapers forever and it can be done!!

I potty trained both of my boys with the run around naked method and I recommend it highly. They were both mostly done within a few days.
I think that helped most while potty training my daughter was positive reinforcement. She *wanted* everyone to be proud of her so she tried extra hard. I made sure she knew she was doing great even if it was just *trying.*
There are also a number of books on the subject *for* the children and from their perspective and if I'm not mistaken, a video or two as well. :-)
Good luck with your endeavor. I'll bet Brea will do just fine and I *know* how thrilled you'll be when it's all over and behind you!
My son trained later, but he was finally ready. We put him in a nice pair of Hot Wheel briefs and he was so proud. However, He wouldn't go at all then. He cried and cried and didn't understand that he could piddle in the pot, just not in the pants. Poor baby, I guess I wasn't too clear on all the facts.
I have two boys so I am not sure if this will work with your daughter. Hope it does! My oldest is going on 15 so I really can't remember what we did but with my youngest I found that the potty training diapers did not work at all. Since they are plastic like pampers, he felt he had pampers on instead of training diapers and would go with them on. I had to use potty training underwear. They are reinforced with more material and are sold by gender since the reinforcement is in different areas. I would watch him after he drank any liquids. They tend to go to a specific area in the house, usually an hour after. If you have pets you understand LOL Once I saw him walking to the corner by my entertainment unit (yes I had to throw it away) I knew I had to run with him to the bathroom. When he did have an accident, the underwears allowed him to feel the wetness which he did not like. That helped alot! I did teach him to sit first then stand. I also had fun stuff in the bathroom. Books, special toys, etc. that he would associate with going to the potty. It worked! Thankfully LOL All the best and FYI there is no right way... you know your child best. My blog is Latina On a Mission
Being a grandmother I need to dust the cobwebs to remember potty training. I remember having a difficult time with our son and getting him to hit the bowl. I smile as I reveal that now. We used to put scott toweling towards the back of the commode to check on his progress. (Memories). Thanks for having the wonderful giveaway.

I am an aunt to a 2 year old who is starting to be potty trained he hasn't got far yet but I was babysitting him on Friday night and he when he went he would pull his pants down and try to take his diaper off. If you don't change his diaper right away even if it's just a little he will cry until you do, so I think he is gonna potty train just fine. His mom has a baby that looks real and she is gonna use it for an example to my nephew.
Always have a spare potty in your car while your child is potty training!

I would recommend not making a big deal out of potty training. Mine were easy to train.

Potty training can be tough. Our friend is trying to potty train her daugther and is having a hard time. She can get her daugther into the bathroom to go potty but her daugther will not sit and stay on the potty seat. She sits but only for a second then just stands up...
I follow your blog.
Potty training is hard if the child isn't ready. Don't push her, let it come naturally. We put a cute potty in the bathroom and bought some underwear that my son picked out. We had a chart on the door with stickers and a bag full of prizes. For everytime he used the potty he got a sticker for himself and one for the chart, if he used the potty 3 times in one day he got a prize at bedtime and once he filled out the chart we went on a special trip. It's important that you let your daughter's caretaker during the day know that you're potty training and what you're doing. My son's teacher was very cooperative and let him walk around bottomles
When I was potty-training my twin boys, we kept a chart on the fridge, and whenever they'd go potty, they got to put a sticker on the chart. They named it their "Poo-Poo Chart" and proudly showed it to everyone who came over. Good luck with your potty training!
